I had a packed long weekend. We had a great day exploring Chinatown. First I got lost driving round and round the CBD area one hand clutching the steering wheel and the other trying to hold open the street directory, when I finally found Smith Street, I was entertained by the volume of tourists and traditional old Chinese Singaporeans, and impressed by the looming giant gold tumblers of herbal tea. Huanna, Zhifeng, Hanyi and I had pretty average dim sum at a very crowded shop, then Sam Jo and Ramu joined us to find a karaoke place. They were all booked, so we marched about in the extreme heat, sweating and laughing. It was my first time at the Chinatown complex hawker centre, then we finally ended the afternoon trooping to McDonald's like teenagers where I had a hot fudge sundae. The sun started to ease up, so Huanna Sam Jo and I drove to Orchard for shoes, dresses and yakitori. We found a nook in Mandarin Gallery where we watched kids getting drunk on barcardi breezers and made plans to attend a City Harvest sermon some day. On Saturday, I had dinner at Siew's house where I made friends with the dog Spark and watched her bake salmon and fry cereal prawns. I tried salted-egg pumpkin, and soon I was so full I had to lie down and close my eyes while her cousins watched world national anthems on youtube. Sunday I woke up bright and early for Jerrine's sister's solemnisation at the arts museum where I sat by myself, missed our friends and embarrassingly teared. I snatched a nap in the afternoon, then made my way to the Fullerton (again getting lost on the roads). The wedding started with gem biscuits, M&Ms, hawthorn sweets, coloured wafers and a dramatic wedding album. Dinner was awesome, and we talked about how Dwayne would have loved all the food. It started with cold salted duck breast, then shark's fin with truffle oil, steamed fish, spinach, chicken with keropok and fried rice with foie gras. Dessert was mango! There was also a bowl of drunken prawns which I allowed myself a treasured morsel of, and was fine until I stupidly rubbed my eyes with my prawn-juice fingers and they threatened to pop out of my head.
